Description
If you've ever had an encounter with mint in your garden, you may understand this story. A number of years ago, I had a small pot of mint growing on my back steps. The smell when I brushed past it was delightful. I enjoyed those scented leaves all summer and felt so fortunate to have ownership of such a splendid plant. The plant matured and in late summer it was covered with lovely lavender blooms.
...................................................................................................................................
When winter came, and it died back I was saddened to see its hibernation begin. As was expected, spring came again and there was my little mint plant, strong, vigorous, and apparently father and mother to many children. My entire backyard began to sprout lovely mint plants.
..................................................................................................................................
The second summer was even more pleasant than the first. The perfume of mint hung heavy in my yard. I didn't understand the evil that lurked behind those plants. They took over everything. They strangled all their neighbors and caused starvation amongst the lilies. They were greedy with space and didn't share an inch if they could get away with it. On top of all their selfish behavior, they intended to have more offspring. Their flowers went to seed; the wind joined in with the battle and spread them far and wide.
...............................................................................................................................
Finally, with a shovel, a rake, nasty chemicals, and massive determination, the fight to reclaim the yard began. In a few weeks, those devious plants had been reduced to stems and compost. I was tired, but victorious. I went inside and celebrated my victory with those sneaky mint plants by painting the last survivors. Be warned of the perils of mint, the sweet deviant that it is. It may take over and it isn't kind. The painting was completed in oil paint on canvas. It took 3rd place in the Fine Art America Vase with Flowers contest in September, 2014.
